What Is Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes? |
||||
Type 1 Diabetes Type 1 diabetes is also called juvenile diabetes and onset usually occurs in childhood or adolescence. This is a condition in which the body's immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin therefore making the body incapable of producing it. Persons with Type 1 diabetes must take daily insulin injections in order to survive. |
Type 2 Diabetes Type 2 diabetes is also called adult diabetes and develops most often in middle age and older adults. This condition is characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by either a lack of insulin or the body's inability to use insulin efficiently. Type 2 diabetes may be controlled with diet, exercise, weight loss and may require oral medications and/or insulin injections.
